East African Athletes Shine at 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon

The 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon delivered excitement and unforgettable performances as Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes dominated the race. Kenyan star Edwin Kibet secured victory in the men’s category, crossing the finish line in 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 6 seconds to claim his second marathon title and the $50,000 prize. Having previously won in 2023 and finishing third in 2024, Kibet’s win marked a powerful comeback.

Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa triumphed in the women’s category, completing the race in 2 hours, 37 minutes, and 4 seconds to earn her first-ever Lagos City Marathon victory.

Nigeria’s pride, Nyango Gyang Boyi, impressed by finishing 8th overall, clocking 2:25:41.58 to become the fastest Nigerian athlete. His achievement earned him a $4,000 prize and an additional ₦2 million as the top local finisher.

The marathon, which began at the National Stadium in Surulere and concluded at Eko Atlantic City, attracted thousands of runners and spectators. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also participated, reinforcing the event’s community spirit. Recognized as a World Athletics Gold Label race, the marathon continues to showcase international talent and cement its status as a premier global sporting event.
