The Nigerian leader received a special invitation from the Pope, delivered through Cardinal Pietro Parolin, emphasizing the importance of his presence at this pivotal moment for the Catholic Church and the world, which is facing numerous challenges.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will travel to Rome, Italy, on Saturday to attend the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV, the 267th Bishop of Rome.

Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, was elected by the Conclave of Cardinals following the passing of Pope Francis on April 21. The inauguration ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 18, at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.

During his visit, President Tinubu will be accompanied by prominent Catholic leaders, including:

  • Minister of State for Foreign Affairs: Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu
  • Archbishops:
    • Archbishop Lucius Ugorji of Owerri: President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria
    • Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Abuja
    • Archbishop Alfred Martins of Lagos
  • Catholic Bishop: Mathew Hassan Kukah of Sokoto Diocese

The Pope expressed a personal connection to Nigeria, stating that the country is particularly dear to him due to his past experience working in the Apostolic Nunciature in Lagos during the 1980s.

After participating in the inauguration ceremony, President Tinubu is scheduled to return to Abuja on May 20.
