UN Chief Urges Countries To Filfill Financial Obligations For Peacemaking

UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged countries to fulfill their financial obligations to support international peacekeeping efforts. Speaking at the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025 in Berlin, Guterres emphasized that the effectiveness of peacekeeping operations relies on member states’ commitment.

The UN currently manages 11 peacekeeping operations worldwide, with a budget of $5.6 billion for nine operations. Guterres noted that this amount represents a small fraction of global military spending, highlighting the cost-effectiveness of UN peacekeeping.

However, he expressed concern about liquidity problems facing peacekeeping operations and stressed the importance of timely payments from member states. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul echoed this sentiment, suggesting that countries should pledge additional resources while also working to make missions more efficient.

The UN faces funding challenges, particularly from the United States under President Donald Trump’s administration. Despite these difficulties, Guterres and other leaders are working to ensure the continuation of vital peacekeeping efforts.
